Abstract
Establishing a correct sonographic diagnosis, as well as the precise and reproducible biometric evaluation based on this diagnosis, remains challenging. This is directly related to a number of factors, with image quality and individual expertise of the operator being the most important variables. Automatic detection of key features of the target image is implemented in the majority of tools available for image analysis in order to reduce operator dependency and overcome limited clinical resources in the assessment of large image data sets. These automatic algorithms are of particular value in ultrasound diagnostics. This review summarizes the advantages and limitations of recent technologies for automatic image analysis.
