Abstract

Objective: The prediction of patients with high anxiety prior to surgery is important to optimize the treatment of patients. The study deals with the question whether the configuration of features of patients makes such a prediction possible. Method: In subjects surveys including N = 369 (study 1) and N = 401 (study 2) patients' self-reported anxiety at the evening of the day prior to surgery was predicted by means of configural frequency analysis (CFA). Study 1 serves to create hypotheses (descriptive analysis) that were tested confirmatorily by data of study 2. Results and conclusions: Results demonstrate that anxiety in the afternoon is a good predictor for anxiety in the evening of the day prior to surgery. In addition, 18-49 year old women, particularily those with high degrees in negative stress coping skills can be characterized as a risk group with high psychic anxiety.
