Abstract
Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (de Quervain) is a painful inflammation of the thyroid gland presumably associated with a viral infection. Patients suffer from serious local pain, markers of inflammation are (strongly) elevated. Ultrasound of the thyroid gland can be useful for diagnostics. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the treatment of choice in non-pregnant women and in men. Prednisolone may be tried if NSAIDs are without sufficient effect. In case of hyperthyreosis betablocker may be given in addition.
