Abstract
Pregnancy and puerperium are regarded as periods of a significantly elevated risk for thromboembolic events. The latter are responsible for significant maternal morbidity and mortality. The large majority of affected women can be identified as having accumulated risk factors, so that risk-adapted anticoagulation may help to prevent thromboembolic complications. National and international guidelines recommend specific therapeutic approaches. This review addresses special pitfalls in the pre-, peri- and postpartum management of women with an increased risk for thromboembolic events.
