Abstract

Fournier's gangrene is characterized by a necrotizing fasciitis of the perianal and genital region, caused by a synergistic polymicrobial infection. Severe pain in the anal and genital region is the main clinical characteristic. In the beginning of the disease is only minimal evidence of the cutaneous necrosis. Due to the rapid progress of the disease Fournier's gangrene is a surgical emergency. Immediate surgical intervention is indicated. The surgical procedures comprise radical debridements and consecutive open wound dressings. In cases with extensive defects the performance of a diverting stoma is necessary in order to avoid fecal contamination of the wound. By using standardised reconstructive techniques it will lead to decent results under cosmetic aspects.
