Abstract
Objective: We report here the results of a multicentric study to evaluate the sustained effects of outpatient neurorehabilitation under special consideration of the ultimate goal of rehabilitation as anchored in German social law, namely participation and self-determined conduct of life. Method: In a multicentric observational study, patients at 17 outpatient neurorehabilitation centres dealing with patients recovering from stroke or traumatic brain injury were asked to fill in a questionnaire. This was carried out 4 times: On admission to and discharge from the rehabilitation centre and on month 4 and 12 post rehabilitation. Additionally, clinical experts were also asked to rate the patients' status at admission and discharge. Results and conclusions: The results of a representative sample of German outpatients in neurorehabilitation centres clearly suggest that positive and sustained effects in terms of the ultimate goal of rehabilitation, namely participation and self-determined conduct of life as specified under social law can be achieved by this approach to rehabilitation. The effects are observable and verifiable even 12 months after discharge. There are differences in the outcome parameters investigated; the results draw attention to numerous clinical implications.
