Abstract

Stroke in childhood is a rare disease which leads to a functional deficit in a significant number of patients. Awareness of predisposing conditions or risk factors and acute symptoms of childhood stroke are important prerequisites for early diagnosis and prevention of recurrent stroke. Early brain imaging (MRI, MR-Angiography) is essential for further medical care. For prevention of recurrent stroke the acetylsalicylic acid (3-5 mg/kg/d) is recommended. Patients with thrombophilic risk factors may benefit from anticoagulation therapy with low-molecular-weight heparin which is still under investigation. Early rehabilitation therapy should become a main focus in medical care of pediatric stroke patients.
