Abstract
The use of active implants is regulated in Germany by law and the associated ordinances. Medical devices may only be operated or used by people who have the necessary training and experience. This means that physicians who use implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) treatment need to acquire basic technical knowledge in addition to in-depth knowledge of rhythmology. This “expertise in ICD treatment” summarizes the contents for acquiring the necessary expertise and the theoretical knowledge imparted. The expertise covers new techniques, such as the subcutaneous ICD as well as the current guidelines, new studies on the indications and studies on intraoperative testing and programming recommendations. In the follow-up care, particular attention is paid to telemedical aspects and the legal basis as well as the current study situation. Together with the practical experience gained in clinical training and further education, the contents presented are the prerequisite for high-quality ICD treatment.
