Abstract

Background: The topic of possible risks and adverse effects of rehabilitation treatment is widely neglected, though clinical lore suggests that such side effects do occur. Methods: Data from quality assurance programs and other research on clinical outcomes were checked for hints on adverse outcomes of rehabilitation treatments. In addition, results of five focus groups with patients and therapists from a rehabilitation centre as well as results of a survey of rehab patients on possible side effects are reported. Results: There is sufficient evidence that negative effects of rehabilitation are not negligible. On this background, avoidable and also inevitable adverse effects of rehabilitation are discussed. Conclusions: Rehabilitation can very well yield adverse effects, and there is an urgent need for further research.
