Abstract
Results from the study >>Transitions in Alcohol Consumption and Smoking<< (TACOS) are presented. 230 naturally remitted alcohol dependent individuals are compared with 230 alcohol dependent subjects in an inpatient motivational treatment with regard to sociodemographic and dependence related variables. Natural remitters reveal more severe dependence, less social pressure from family and sources other than partner and family and a more stable occupational situation prior to remission. The inpatient group experienced more often and temporally closer to treatment admission unsuccessful abstinence attempts. Differences between groups are discussed with respect to implications for secondary prevention and treatment.
