Abstract

In this thesis, the camera, also referred to as Electro Optical System, of the NH-90 Sea Lion helicopter is analyzed and developed as a digital component of a Unity-based simulation software. The objective is to create a camera that represents the real system as closely as possible so that it can be used to create synthetic training data for training an Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist in maritime Search and Rescue operations. In the first phase, data about the real system was gathered, and different implementation approaches were researched. Next, the concept of a digital system was developed and implemented. Since part of the data was incomplete, it was decided to create a highly dynamic system that allows for easy modification of specifications without requiring programming knowledge. To ensure a functional component, the system was evaluated by two experts in the final phase. Results show that most of the defined features were implemented successfully, although some aspects remain unfinished or have the potential for improvement. In particular, the rendering of the water in the infrared camera mode is incomplete and needs to be reworked. Overall, the thesis demonstrates that the system provides a promising foundation for extensions and improvements.
