Abstract

Uterine fibroids are found in a considerable number of women in the fertile phase of life and may become symptomatic with bleeding disorders, abdominal pain and infertility depending on the size and location. Apart from surgical and drug-based treatments radiological interventions are well-established treatment options for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. This review summarizes the current data concerning the interventional approach, prerequisites and indications as well as contraindications, side effects and fertility issues of the two most relevant radiological interventions for uterine fibroids, i.e. embolization of uterine arteries and high-intensity focused ultrasound.
