Abstract

Cardioanalgosedation is becoming increasingly more important and is already the standard of care in many electrophysiological centers for successful and low-risk interventions. It plays an important role in the comfort of patients and investigators. The spectrum of cardioanalgosedation ranges from gentle anxiolysis to deep analgesia in spontaneously breathing patients. The first edition of this position paper on cardioanalgosedation with a focus on interventions in the field of rhythmology provides recommendations for their use in the context of electrophysiological interventions, implantation of cardiac devices, such as cardiac pacemakers or defibrillators as well as other cardiac procedures. This paper discusses the indications, objectives and patient selection including risk assessment of the individual patient for sedation. The paper gives an overview of the pharmacology of the various sedatives and analgesics regarding their safety and efficacy. It also defines standards for optimal patient preparation and informed consent about the sedation. The personnel and equipment requirements for the implementation and documentation of sedation as well as the clinical monitoring within the framework of the procedure are defined as well as the requirements for the training, further education and training of the personnel.
