Abstract
Genetic analysis of the polar body can be a suitable approach for preimplantation genetic diagnosis of certain monogenic disorders and maternal structural chromosomal aberrations. Because most numerical chromosomal abnormalities originate from female meiosis it has also been suggested that polar body testing might be used to increases the efficiency of assisted reproduction techniques by positive selection of euploid oocytes for further in-vitro culture and transfer in the womb. Since the chance of meiotic errors in oocytes increases with age, aneuploidy screening in polar body analysis has mostly been performed for women with increased maternal age.
