Abstract
Mössbauer spectra of LiTao3 single crystals doped with 57Co and 57Fe indicate that Fe2+ impurities occupy octahedral sites with their immediate environment being free from oxygen vacancies, however, the oxygen octahedra are deformed corresponding to the effective charge of iron. The measured and calculated temperature dependences of the electric field gradient at the iron nucleus support this conclusion.
