Abstract
Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents need education and training on a regular basis to effectively manage complex treatment regimes in the daily routine. Since 1999 the University Children's Hospital Lübeck Mobile Diabetes Training Team (MDSH) has offered structured, inpatient diabetes training courses for children, adolescents, and their parents in eight regional pediatric hospitals. We describe the objectives and methods of the training program and analyze its effects on family burden. Family burden was significantly reduced in the domain of treatment management in the daily routine. No effects were measured regarding personal and family problems. Given the results we discuss whether the timeframe and the setting of the training model should focus more strongly on the needs of parents. The study results demonstrate the need for psychosocial support for parents of diabetic children as a significant element in long-term care.
