Abstract
Prof. Pankow, who initiated phycological research at the University of Rostock, compiled the knowledge about Baltic Algae. His book „Ostsee-Algenflora“ is still the only comprehensive basis of knowledge for phycologists in this region. His scholars, following the paths he paved, are working all over the world. This article is giving an example from South America. A consortium of scientists, who started with taxonomic and biogeographical studies in the Baltic region, got the chance to study charophytes in Chile. This resulted in the discovery of 17 species not described before from this country; some of them are described for the first time from South America. Based on the results from these expeditions, the distribution patterns of the species as well as aspects of their biogeography are discussed.
