Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess professional treatment for individuals with alcohol dependence or abuse in the general population. Participants were randomly drawn from the resident registration files. The response rate for the personal interview was 70,2%. In total, 4075 respondents were interviewed. Alcohol dependence and abuse according to DSM- IV were assessed with the M-CIDI. In addition, standardized questionnaires where used to assessed utilization of formal treatment and reasons for not seeking help. Among alcohol abusers, only few individuals looked for treatment; most frequently, counseling by a physician was specified (5.4%). Among individuals with a lifetime alcohol dependence, 59.5% had no contact to professional help, 13.7% showed minor contacts, and 26.8% more intensive help-seeking. Most of the alcohol dependent individuals had contact to the medical care system in the last 12 month (92.7%), therefore, secondary preventive measures should be implemented in this setting.
