Abstract

Since the 1970s the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer has decreased due to population-based screening programs. Screening is primarily based on annual Pap smears, and colposcopy is indicated in special caseswith abnormal cytology. In recent years the guidelines for cervical cancer screening have been updated. Colposcopy is an integral part of these guidelines. Especially American and British guidelines place emphasis on colposcopy. In the article we present principles, indications and innovations of colposcopy. We emphasize the significance of colposcopy, vulvoscopy and vaginoscopy in the present guidelines and the role of colposcopy for diagnosis and treatment of precancerous lesions.
