Abstract
Complete regional lymphadenectomy is an integral part of the total mesorectal excision. A complete mesorectum is the product of a precise TME performed according to oncological standards. Additional to the purely macroscopic assessment of the pathologist and surgeon resectates are more and more evaluated on the basis of objective methods. Dye-marking and angiography of the TME-preparation are first decisive steps towards a standardized documentation of rectal resectates. The following reflections on the metastastic spread of the primary rectum cancer are based on angiographic studies with 34 surgical preparations after TME. Lymphatic pathways of the rectum were studied by Fritsch, Kühnel and Stelzner.
