Abstract

For paediatricians mental retardation/intellectual disability is a frequent question. Approximately 2% of our population show subaverage intellectual functioning that may be associated with dysmorphic signs or malformations, too. The degree of impairment from mental retardation varies widely, from profoundly impaired to mild or borderline retardation. Genetic defects or mutations are detectable in up to 40% of affected persons.
