Abstract
Background/aim of the study: Only a minority of individuals with alcohol related disorders seeks professional help. Due to a high attainability of the respective target group in general practices, however, these could serve as an excellent place for initiating early interventions. A stepped-care approach in providing brief interventions will be tested this setting. Method: Participants recruited in general practices will be randomly assigned to three groups consisting of 150 subjects each: A stepped-care condition with a stepped provision of interventions, a fixed-care condition with an a priori fixed amount of interventions and a control condition. Expected results: The stepped-care condition is expected to be as effective but more economic than the fixed care condition. Conclusion: Results could serve as a rational to provide economically sound brief interventions in general practices.
