Yoko Miura, Paul S. Bernstein, Chantal Dysli, Lydia Sauer, Martin Zinkernagel

Abstract

There are different endogenous fluorophores in the retina. Each of them can be characterized by a spectral and a lifetime component. In this chapter an overview of fluorophores in the eye with their characteristic properties is provided. It includes lipofuscin/bisretinoids, macular pigment, collagen/elastin, redox coenzymes, melanin, lipid peroxidation endproducts, advanced glycation endproducts, and other fluorophores.
