Abstract

This review article focuses on extracurricular vascular surgery training. While the teaching curriculum in the course of studies in human medicine is regulated nationally in the licensing regulations for physicians, extracurricular courses for students represent an additional commitment on the part of students and teachers. From the perspective of the authors, one focus of extracurricular teaching in vascular surgery is on practical surgical training. Offers for extracurricular vascular surgery teaching are accepted by the students. In spite of the additional time and financial expenditure, students particularly appreciate the practical aspects of vascular surgery, which are often underrepresented in curricular offers. The teachers’ and students’ own initiative is a basic prerequisite for extracurricular training. The extent to which extracurricular training has an effect on the career choice of students in vascular surgery must be systematically recorded over the long term course.
