Abstract

The object of this study that was motivated by a survey of Molander and Backman (1994) is to test a competition in tennis sports as a stress condition. Therefore it should be possible to test age related processes in a stressful situation. 72 male tennis players aged between 20-79 years were tested in a competition match and in a training match as a control condition. Dependent variables were self-ratings of the present mood and coping strategies, autonomic variables and behavioral data of the match. The results indicate that the competition is a stressful situation only for 20-39 year-old players. Under stress conditions they also react with performance decrements. After a match younger players describe more unfavourable coping strategies than older ones. The results do not corresponde to the model of Molander and Backman.
