Abstract
Ernst Gustav Ziemke was one of the most influential German-speaking professors of forensic medicine in the early twentieth century. Up to his death in 1935 he was head of the institute of forensic medicine in Kiel. During World War I he was head physician of a mobile army surgical hospital in Belgium and in White Russia. In addition to his surgical activities, out of interest he performed autopsies of deceased patients with handwritten documentation of the findings. These autopsy reports are a very interesting and revealing contemporary document, particularly with respect to the personal information of the soldiers as well as the clinical course and autopsy findings following severe battlefield injuries in World War I.
