Abstract

For systematically assessing the burden of cancer and its trends, a sustainable population-based cancer registration is necessary. Since the establishment of population-based cancer registration in Germany in 1926 in Hamburg, the area coverage and completeness have been improved considerably. The German population-based cancer registries associated in the Society of the Epidemiologic Cancer Registry in Germany (GEKID) currently document cancer cases throughout Germany. For a population of roughly 40 million (approximately half of the German population) a complete registration of all malignant neoplasms has been accomplished. On this basis a number of 460,000 new cancer cases in Germany in the year 2007 can be estimated.
