Abstract
The aim is to present the development and the test statistics of the »SEverity Scale of Alcohol dependence (SESA)« on grounds of the alcohol dependence syndrome which is also the base for the dependence diagnosis according to ICD or DSM. Methods: The test criteria of the questionnaire were estimated in three studies with the following samples: 322 alcohol dependent inpatients in detoxification treatment in a psychiatric hospital, 226 alcohol dependents who had been identified by screening plus alcohol dependence diagnosis in a general hospital and 55 alcohol dependents detected in a representative population survey (n=4,075 adults). The results show the internal consistency and validity of the SESA. It is concluded that this questionnaire provides an optimized tool for the estimation of the severity of alcohol dependence. The validity is verified by a particular broad range of alcohol dependents detected in different institutions as well as the general population.
