Abstract

The third edition of the National Guidelines (NG) on the management of asthma contain a more precise definition of asthma and updated recommendations on diagnosis and treatment. The new edition of the NG on asthma management introduces some innovations for children and adolescents, to ensure the safety of these particularly vulnerable patient groups. The overall aim in this age groups is to achieve complete asthma control, to allow unlimited activity in daily life minimize the risk of exacerbations and enable normal growth of pulmonary function. The basis of medical treatment are inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in the lowest effective dosage. The consultation of an expert should always be considered for the small group of children and adolescents with difficult and severe treatment-refractory asthma. To better understand severe asthma and provide up-to-date treatment including biologicals collaboration between experts in pediatric pneumology should be encouraged.
