Abstract
Since about 40 years, both clinical rheumatology and epidemiology make use of explicit criteria for the identification of various rheumatic disorders. In the fifties, they have been proposed as "diagnostic criteria", whereas today they are developed as "criteria for the classification". Taking rheumatoid arthritis as an example, this history is described and analysed. Diagnostic and classifiying criteria turn out to be principally different. Considering further fibromyalgia, vertebral osteoporosis, vasculitides and nonspecific back pain, the second section of the article analyses the relevance, usefullness as well as risks of classification criteria for clinical rheumatology.
