Determination of Iron Oxide Concentrations in Ferrofluids using a Micro-CT Phantom

Abstract

This paper introduces micro Computed Tomography (μ-CT) as a new method for the determination of the superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) concentration of magnetic ferrofluids and thus as an alternative to photometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy. In the field of medical imaging, this approach shows potential to be useful for the validation of new tracers especially for application in magnetic particle imaging (MPI). A variety of application scenarios is proposed for MPI. However, before application of the magnetic fluids in human imaging, μ-CT can be used for calibration of the SPIO concentration in organs in animal models.
