Abstract
Background: Intraoperative positioning of the patients in laparoscopic colorectal resection needs more effort than in conventional procedure und probably implicates a thromboembolic risk. We have investigated the effect of the higher intraoperative strain in laparoscopic assisted colorectal resection on the patients' feeling in the early postoperative phase (operation-day to 4th postoperative day). Patients and Method: In the years 2000 to 2002 38 patients with sigmoid or rectal resection are matched (laparoscopic/conventional). Each group contains 19 patients (twelve male and seven female). The mean age is 66 years in both groups. The mean operation time is 196 vs. 192 minutes; postoperative stay in hospital is 15 vs. 11 days. First postoperative defecation is documented on the 4th vs. 5th postoperative day. Complete oral intake of food without parenteral feeding is tolerated on the 8th vs. 6th postoperative day. Immediately after operation and on the 4th postoperative day patients are asked by the standardized questionnaire ANP and all data are evaluated statistically. Results: The laparoscopic approach results in a shortened postoperative length of stay in hospital, faster complete oral intake of food and significantly fewer postoperative headache (p < 0.01). "Well-being" or "physical non well-being" is not different in both groups. Conclusions: The extreme intraoperative positioning in laparoscopic procedures does not influence the postoperative feeling measurably. There are no thromboembolic complications in our collective.
