Abstract

Abstract We discuss the application of cross-linking methods for the investigation of the molecular environment of nascent polypeptide chains as they pass through the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Several membrane proteins have been identified, purified and characterized which seem to be located at the translocation site. The results suggest that the latter is more complex and more dynamic than previously assumed.
