Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether changes in heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to determine the individual anaerobic threshold (IAT). Furthermore, the correlation between the HRV and the sympathetic activation during an incremental exercise test was investigated. Ten female and ten male healthy, sports-active persons (females: 26.7±2.3 years; 170.8±6.3 cm; 63.6±6.8kg; VO2- max 46.2±5.1ml/min/kgBW; males: 27.7±5.3 years; 183.5±4.1 cm; 81.0±6.9kg; VO2max 50.0±2.9ml/min/kgBW) performed a ramp load cycle ergometric exercise to determine the IAT. Methods: HRV was recorded and the activity of the autonomic nervous system was evaluated by measuring venous blood concentrations of ephedrine and norepinephrine during the test. The IAT was validated in a 30-min steady state cycling exercise test according to the model of Heck. Results: The main results are as follows. Bland Altman Plots show a high concordance between the IAT and the HRV threshold (measured with nonlinear parameters). The most significant concordance was determined regarding SD1 and SD2. Additionally, a coherency between the nonlinear parameters of HRV and the ephedrine and norepinephrine blood concentrations could be seen. Discussion: These results suggest that the IAT can be assessed by nonlinear HRV parameters and thus can be used as an indicator of the activity of the sympathetic nervous system during sports exercises.
