Abstract

Male patients (n = 56) awaiting lumbar disc surgery were compared to 56 control patients awaiting another kind of surgery, with regard to mood state after an pre-anesthetic medication. Mood was assessed using a multidimensional self-report inventory. Heart rate and blood pressure were also measured. On the evening before surgery, one of four drug combinations (zolpidem or phenobarbital together with promethazine or placebo) was administered to each patient. The two patient groups showed significant differences in self-reported mood states, especially on measures of hostile state, as a function of drug condition. The results demonstrate the necessity of including a control group of patients rather than only healthy individuals was shown. Regarding aspects of pre-anesthetic medication the multidimensional rating-scale showed the hostile-state as an important factor in emotional states before surgery.
