Abstract

Late-onset adrenal hyperplasia is characterized by occurrence after puberty with symptoms such as unfulfilled wish to conceive, amenorrhea, hirsutism, acne and alopecia. Predominantly, it is caused by the deficiency of the steroid 21-hydroxylase with abnormalities in adrenal steroid biosynthesis. Diagnosis is confirmed by laboratory and molecular genetic tests. An important therapeutic option when treating women suffering from infertility may be the use of dexamethasone. However, in many cases oral contraceptives containing antiandrogenic compounds alone may be sufficient for the treatment of symptoms of hyperandrogenism.
