Abstract

Between 1.10.1984 and 30.9.1985 work disability diagnoses of 246 employees were coded by Federal German compulsory health insurance officers in Hannover under the code number 714. On rechecking it was found that only 67 codings had been performed correctly. Of 144 persons examined by us for rheumatic diseases, 44 had been coded as suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and hence unfit for work, but this was really true in 20 cases only and incorrect in 24 cases, whereas rheumatoid arthritis was found by us to exist in 10 other persons who had not been coded as suffering from that disease.
