Abstract

A septic stimulus leads to an activation of the coagulation system. This results in an imbalance of the haemostatic system preferring the procoagulative pathway. In the specific concept of therapeutical strategies in the treatment of sepsis the inhibition of haemostasis and the modulation of antiinflammatory properties are very important approaches. The therapeutical application of human inhibitors of coagulation (antithrombin, TFPI, rhAPC) in early phases of sepsis was possible after the recombinant synthesis of this substances. International studies demonstrated that only the application of recombinant activated protein C (Drotrecogin-α) has a marked improvement of survival in severe sepsis.
