Abstract

Background: Internationally, accreditation of postgraduate training programs is already established. Aim of this project was to develop quality indicators for accreditation of training programs within the German College of General Practitioners and Family Physicians (DEGAM-Verbundweiterbildungplus). Methods: In a systematic literature search internationally established quality indicators were identified. These were structured and rated in a multi-step procedure by a panel of experts regarding clarity and comprehensibility, relevance, feasibility and suitability for public reporting. Results: A total of 337 quality indicators were identified and reduced to 80 indicators by summarizing similar quality aspects. Indicators that were covered completely by German legislation were excluded in advance with justification by a research work group (n = 52). The panel approved a final set of 19 quality indicators, referring to structure (n = 6) and process quality (n = 13). Conclusions: A set of quality indicators was developed for future accreditation of postgraduate family medicine training programs in Germany. The indicators cover core elements such as structural aspects of training, educational seminars and supervision of trainees. This frame work facilitates site-specific improvement of quality of training. In a next step, other medical specialties may also use this set of quality indicators as a template and adapt them to their specific background.
