Supporting return to work after post-COVID rehabilitation: a cluster randomized feasibility study

Project Details

Description

Background: Post-COVID syndrome is characterized by multiple and partly long-lasting health complaints following a SARS-CoV-2 infection, which can limit work participation. Multimodal post-COVID rehabilitation can improve physical and psychological impairments. However, due to persistent symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive deficits, some patients require further support to return to work. To date, there is a lack of scientifically evaluated interventions to promote work reintegration after post-COVID rehabilitation. Our cluster-randomised controlled feasibility study examines the implementation and effectiveness of an outpatient, work-related intervention to support rehabilitants with post-COVID syndrome in returning to work.
Methods: We include patients with completed post-COVID rehabilitation, an existing workplace and limited work capacity for the next six months. Study participants are recruited in six rehabilitation centers and, depending on the start of rehabilitation, randomly assigned to the intervention or to a control group that can utilize usual care measures. The primary outcome is the self-rated work ability (work ability score; 0 to 10 points) 18 months after post-COVID rehabilitation. We also examine work and health-related outcomes as well as characteristics of the intervention. Data is collected using questionnaires at the end of rehabilitation and after 12 and 18 months. In addition, data on post-COVID rehabilitation, recruitment and intervention delivery will be collected, and qualitative interviews will be conducted with participants in the intervention group.
