Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Germany after cardiovascular diseases. For the treatment of cancer patients, so-called guidelines for medical care (Leitlinien) have been established that reflect the current state of medical knowledge. However, it is known that older cancer patients in Germany are treated according to the guidelines to a lesser extent than younger patients. Treatment that deviates from the guidelines may be medically justified. However, it can also indicate a care deficit.
The aim of the project is to determine which factors determine whether older cancer patients are treated according to the guidelines or not. The study focusses on breast and colorectal cancer in people aged 70 and over. Interviews will be conducted with all those involved (patients, relatives, MDs) and a comprehensive evaluation will be carried out using questionnaires and medical treatment data. .
If successful, project results will be used to improve clinical practice for older cancer patients. This should lead to more need-based treatment and better patient-orientation.
