Description
Following strictly the "Biographical Encyclopedia of Outstanding Physicians" (Vol. 1, A-Kom, 1932; Vol. 2 Kon-Z, 1933), this first supplementary volume (A-Kom) offers the completed biographies of the 2,105 physicians listed in the original work who were still alive at the time of its publication in 1932. Unlike other national and international reference works, which usually present a changing selection of scientists based on current criteria, the special value of this supplementary work lies in the fact that it also includes the biographies of "dropped out" physicians, especially the large number of Jewish physicians and those ostracized as "Jewish" who were lost to the scientific community through emigration, suicide, or deportation (500). But other "outstanding physicians" also fell victim to ethnic conflicts (e.g., Turkey/Greece 1923), political persecution (e.g., Spain 1939; Resistance 1941-44), expulsion (former German eastern territories 1945), and Stalinist terror (1931-38) in the 20th century, without their fates having been acknowledged to date. Thus, this supplementary volume constitutes a unique historical work and is intended as a contribution to the "collective memory of Europe," as the author explains in a detailed, methodological and epistemological foreword.
