University Teaching Award 2019: Investigative Learning

Prize: Research Prizes, Scientific Awards

General Description

The University Teaching Award has been celebrated since 2016. It is awarded annually under an annual motto, which in 2019 was "Research-based learning". The Teaching Arize is interdisciplinary in nature and comes with prize money of 3.000 Euros. The laudatory speech was given by Dipl.-Psych. Juliana Wiechert, Head of the Lecturer`s Service Center.

Prof. Dr. Thorsten M. Buzug and the organizing team received the University's Teaching Award for their concept concerning the annual "Student Conference of the BioMedTec Science Campus". Prof. Buzug developed the event format to give students a platform to present their research results from projects or theses that they have worked on at Lübeck universities, clinics, international research institutions or industrial companies to a larger audience. Here, topics of application-oriented engineering science and computer science with regard to an application in medicine take up a broad space. At the same time, good scientific practice should also be lived and experienced. An English-language publication must be written, which is then criticized and evaluated by the students and supervisors in a double-blind peer review process. The scientific discourse, i.e. the critical examination of one's own research results and those of others, is the actual core of the course.

Prof. Buzug introduced the student conference for the Medical Engineering course in spring 2012. Since then, the student conference has been held annually in the Audimax of the BioMedTec Campus under the organization of the constantly growing team.
In the meantime, the degree programs of Medical Informatics, Biomedical Engineering and Hearing Acoustics and Audiological Technology have also included the student conference in their compulsory curriculum. In 2021, the Biophysics and Robotics and Autonomous Systems degree programs will further strengthen this teaching platform. Partner companies such as Dräger, Philips, VisiConsult, Coherent and Haag Streit, as well as the LSN Life Science Cluster and the Luebeck Chamber of Industry and Commerce regularly support the student conference.
