Scientific Focus

Our group "Neuroscience in Anesthesiology" uses electrophysiological (patch clamp & multi-electrode arrays) and molecular biology methods to study ion channels and to understand how ion channel dysfunctions affect the electrical communication of excitable cells.

Ion Channel Diseases:

Our primary interest is in the molecular function and regulation of ion channels and their involvement in human disease. In particular, we are investigating functional aterations of voltage-gated sodium channels associated with chronic pain disorders and neurological defects, such as epilepsies.

Ion channels and ROS:

Elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can disrupt cellular functions and promote neurodegenerative diseases. We investigate ROS-induced ion channel malfunctions and how they affect neuronal communication.

Ion channels and neurotoxins:

We analyze the molecular mechanisms of ion channel-specific neurotoxins and evaluate their pharmacological potential.

Parkinson's Disease:

Together with the Institute of Neurogenetics at the University of Lübeck, we study the mechanisms of Parkinson's disease using iPS technology in combination with electrophysiological methods.
