Abstract
Tobacco smoking is a highly prevalent health risk behavior, which is the single most preventable cause of death. In Germany, the smoking-attributable mortality is 17%. Less than 10% of the smokers utilize aids for smoking cessation. Furthermore, the majority of smokers is not ready to change the smoking behavior. Therefore, interventions are necessary which give support to the development of the motivation to abstain or reduce the amount of tobacco smoked. Effective treatments as well as brief interventions are available. All these interventions should be applicated differentially among subgroups of smokers.
