Abstract

Because of the medical, social and economic problems multiple pregnancies are considered to be the most important risk of assisted reproduction. However, many infertility patients even wish a multiple pregnancy. The awareness and the acceptance of multiple pregnancies were evaluated in 34 infertility patients, 74 patients asking for preimplantation diagnostics (PID) patients, 29 women who had completed their family planning and 59 medical students by a questionnaire. In spite of the awareness of the risks of a multiple pregnancy, twins were not considered to be a problem and all groups would accept the risk of twins. Infertility and PID patients would also take the risk of triplets, while women with completed family planning and medical students were indifferent whether they would take the risk of triplets. In the infertility patients the acceptance to take the risks of a triplet pregnancy increased with the duration of infertility and with age. The results of this questionnaire stress the importance of a detailed information of infertility patients because of the high acceptance of multiple pregnancies.
