Abstract

This chapter aims to give an overview on the topic of magnetic particle imaging and its possibilities in diagnostics and therapy. An elementary discussion on particle properties and physical principles is proceeded by the concepts of signal generation, particle detection and spatial encoding used in magnetic particle imaging. A general description of the hardware setups and the reconstruction methods will give an impression of common challenges and their solutions. Furthermore, the medical relevance, especially the possibility to combine diagnostics and therapy is discussed. The chapter will be completed by a debate on strengths and limitations as well as future directions of the magnetic particle imaging modality.
