Laparoscopic Removal of Solitary Duodenal Duplication Cyst with 2-mm Instruments in an 8-Year-Old Girl

The laparoscopic resection of a 6 × 4 × 3-cm cystic tumor from the lesser sac using a 5-mm laparoscope and two 2-mm trocars is reported. The patient was an 8-year-old girl who presented with intermittent left upper-quadrant abdominal pain. The MRI scans and abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated the cystic mass to be located on the posterior wall of the stomach medial to the spleen. The tumor was resected laparoscopically, evacuated of its gelatinous content, and exteriorized through the umbilicus. Histologically, the diagnosis of a duplication cyst of the duodenum was made. The technique is described, and a review of the pathophysiologic features of this disease is given. We conclude that the laparoscopic approach with 2-mm instruments is a safe and efficient mode of treatment of duplication cysts in children.
