Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients show an increased co-morbidity of psychiatric diseases. Vascular dementia and depression are common, but the risk of dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) is increased up 1.5- to 2-fold. Due to the demographic trend the prevalence of both diseases will clearly be even more important in the future. Different mechanisms causing DAT are currently discussed such as inflammatory processes or genetic factors; in addition, T2DM is related to DAT. Due to the frequency and co morbidity of diabetes and dementia it is timely to focus on cognitive impairment in patients suffering from T2DM. DECODIA (Depression and Cognition in Diabetes) is a consortium which is part of the competence network diabetes granted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany. The ultimate goal is to reveal the interaction between cognitive processes and insulin in the brain.
