Abstract
Children with speech disorders form the largest clinical population of speech and language pathology. However, they do not form a homogenous group. Current research results were able to demonstrate that different levels of the speech processing chain can be involved leading to different symptoms and, more important, to different intervention approaches required. In order to decide whether intervention should be provided, and if so at what age and which approach to take, detailed knowledge about normal speech acquisition and about causes and types of speech disorders is necessary. This article provides an overview about these issues.
